Class Description:  Do you want to have perfect corners in your quilt blocks every time or make complex pieced blocks accurately? Try paper piecing.

What is paper piecing? This technique uses paper templates that have the sewing lines of the quilt block printed on the paper. Pieces of fabric are sewn together on the paper following these lines, thus making a very precise, repeatable block. The paper is later removed.

About this class

This two session class will give you the fundamentals of paper piecing and the confidence to get started.  We will use the “Stars All Over” pattern (by Angelina O’Connor) which includes detailed instructions and all the foundation papers you need to make 4 stars. It will also include a template so you can make more foundation pieces.  During the class you will make several blocks and learn tips and tricks so you can complete your quilt at home.

Want to make a different size? No problem. The patterns has instructions and yardage for 2 sizes:  Wall Hanging (24 x 24) and Lap Quilt. The pattern can be used to make a bed quilt, just make more stars!

Class schedule

  • Friday evening:  Cut your fabric and watch demo of a block construction (5:30 -8 pm)
  • Saturday:  Let’s get going! Start making your blocks! (10:30 am – 4:30 pm)

Supply List (We recommend a visit to Ruby Street Quiltworks where the super friendly staff can help you select what you need!)

What fabric do you need?

There is ‘star’ fabric and ‘background’ fabric.

  • Background fabric should be the same for the whole quilt.
  • Star fabric can be all the same fabric or mix up your fabrics for a scrappier look.

For the stars: Colorful solids or patterns are appropriate. 1/8 yard will make 3 stars. The stars can be the same fabric or each star can be different. If using the same fabric for all stars, 1 yard is sufficient to make a 50” x 50” lap quilt.  If using different fabric for every star, use fat quarters or a 1/8 yard cut of each fabric (you will need a total of 1 yard of star fabric).

For the background fabric:  2 yards. A solid, tone-on-tone, or minimal print is suggested.  Any staff member at Ruby Street Quiltworks can help you select fabric; tell them you have signed up for the paper piecing class.

Pattern: The required pattern is an additional cost, $10, paid to the instructor at the first class, by check or cash.

What to bring to class:

Fabric, fabric scissors, paper scissors, rotary cutter, 24” ruler, cutting mat, 5 zip lock bags (quart size) and one gallon size bag.

Wednesday and Thursday

  • Sewing machine, 90/14 size sewing machine needle, threads to match your fabrics, cut fabric, pattern, fabric scissors, paper scissors, seam ripper, rotary cutter, 24” ruler, cutting mat, extra sewing machine needle, extra rotary blade, pins with flat heads
  • Please make sure your machine is in good working order. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to participate in a class because your machine is not happy. Bring the accessories box (including a quarter inch foot and a walking foot if you have them) extra bobbins, and the power cord and foot pedal!! It’s also nice to have the instruction book along, just in case ...
  • Surge protector for your machine. (Using a surge protector is a smart thing to do anywhere you sew, but especially in a classroom where multiple machines, irons and other miscellaneous power tools are using the same circuit).

Plan to bring a lunch or snack or take a quick break to get something from one of the nearby eateries.
