Adventures in English Paper Piecing (Hexies to Go!)

Instructor:  Phyllis Anderson
Class Fee:  $15 per class
Dates and Times:  The class meets the First Sunday of each month, starting Sunday, February 4th, 11:30 – 3:00

Description:  In this class you’ll learn the wildly popular art of English Paper Piecing (EPP) with a skilled and delightful instructor. English Paper Piecing is for those who love hand work and want a portable project featuring small pieces that fit into small, portable containers and can be done in small slices of time.

Phyllis will present an English Paper Pieced Rosette (a pieced rose which features two or more rounds of hexagram based shapes) each month based on blocks presented in the book The New Hexagon by Katja Marek.

You’ll learn all the skills you need to master EPP. Phyllis can offer advice on fabric selection and fussy cutting, suggest tools and supplies that make the work come together quickly and easily, demonstrate a variety of techniques and offer project suggestions which range from a single decorative pillow, to modern quilt layouts, to complex “Millefiori” type quilts.

Project Size: Turn your rosette into a single decorative pillow or continue making rosettes for a larger project.

Skill Level: The class is for beginners but is a fun adventure for those who want to improve their skills, learn new techniques, explore design ideas or just work with a skilled instructor and like-minded stitchers.

Required Book: The New Hexagon by Katja Marek. You can purchase the book here

Fabric: If you’re brand new to EPP, you may wish to bring just enough fabric to practice. Scraps can work well. If you want to work toward a larger project with coordinating fabric consider one of our Designer Bundles. They’re half off right now! Shop here.

Here’s what you’ll need for the first Rosette:  Phyllis used fabric from our “Wild Nectar” Collection. You can choose fabric from another collection or just dig into your scrap basket. If you want to fussy cut motifs as Phyllis has done you will need up to 1/3 yard of the fabric you want to fussy cut.

  • 1/3 yard for fussy cutting
  • 1/8 yard each of 3 accent fabrics
  • 6 FQ’s for the background

 Equipment and Notions:

  • Sewline marking pencil (or other removable marking product)
  • Sewline glue pen or fabric glue stick
  • Clover Wonder Clips (handy but optional)
  • “Sharp” needles for hand sewing
  • Basting thread (old thread in bright colors that you can easily see to remove) works well
  • Our lovely Aurifil Thread (or other quality sewing thread) for block construction)
  • Rotary cutter and small rotary cutting mat or scissors (for both paper and fabric)
  • A ruler with a 60-degree marking

Class Reservation and Parking Information

You can reserve a spot in this class with full payment of the class fee. If you are not able to attend the class, please notify us as soon as possible so your space may be offered to a student on the waiting list. A full refund will be made in the form of a store credit, which may be used towards another class or any purchases in the shop, so long as you notify us at least 5 days in advance of the first class date.

We regret that, on occasion, we must cancel a class because enrollments fall below our class minimums or due to an unforeseen illness or emergency. Of course, in this event we will fully refund your class fee either to your credit card or in the form of a store credit. We are unable to process refunds for class supplies.

While attending class, we kindly ask that you park against the chain link fence or on the street alongside the shop. There is also an additional parking lot just across the street from our back door. This kindness will allow access to patients of the chiropractic office and other businesses in our building. Of course, you are welcome to pull right up to the door for unloading. Thank you for understanding.
