Class Description: Learn to quilt in our new class for absolute beginners. In three class sessions you will learn to cut, piece, quilt, and bind a 14” x 28” table runner. The lessons are designed to teach you the essential skills you’ll need to make your table runner, and set you up to move to intermediate level projects.

In our introductory, evening session, you will learn how to use a rotary cutter, mat, and quilting ruler to cut all the pieces for the top of your table runner and the binding. You’ll learn how to cut fabric to use the straight of grain, cross grain, and bias to the best advantage in your project. How to use directional prints will also be addressed.

On Saturday morning you will sew your “quilt” top, and assemble your quilt “sandwich” with the top, batting, and backing. You’ll learn strip piecing, chain piecing, seam matching, and how to piece half-square triangles with precise points. In the afternoon you will quilt the layers together with your own chosen stitching design.

On Sunday morning you will complete the quilting process. In the afternoon you will attach your binding and finish your project.

Supply List (We recommend a visit to Ruby Street Quiltworks where the super friendly staff can help you select what you need!)

Fabric

  • Focus fabric – 3/8 yard (A small to medium size print is recommended because focus fabric strips will be narrow, only 1 ½” to 2 ½ inches wide when sewn.)
  • Accent fabric #1 and binding – ½ yard
  • Accent fabric #2 – 1/8 yard
  • Backing – ½ yard
  • Batting – 18” x 32” piece of low or medium loft cotton batting

Pattern (The Pattern will be supplied at the first class session.)

Equipment and Notions

  • Sewing machine that you are familiar with. Please make sure your machine is in good working order. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to participate in a class because your machine is not happy. Bring the accessories box (including a quarter inch foot and a walking foot if you have them) extra bobbins, and the power cord and foot pedal!! It’s also nice to have the instruction book along, just in case.
  • Size 80 universal needles for piecing. For quilting your layers bring size 80 microtex or size 90 quilting needles.
  • Surge protector for your machine. (Using a surge protector is a smart thing to do anywhere you sew, but especially in a classroom where multiple machines, irons and other miscellaneous power tools are using the same circuit).
  • Rotary cutter
  • Self-healing cutting mat (18 x 24 is a good size)
  • Rotary cutting ruler - a 6” or 8 ½” x 24” is a good size for beginning quilters.
  • Curved safety pins for basting quilts
  • Thread to coordinate with your fabric or a neutral color. We highly recommend our Aurifil! (Filling a couple of bobbins ahead of time will allow more time for your project in class.)
  • Your sewing kit with your favorite sewing notions: fabric shears, thread snips or scissors, marking tools, straight pins, basting pins, etc.

Plan to bring a lunch or snack or take a quick break to get something from one of the nearby eateries.
