Machine Quilting - Saturday, March 24, 2012
Instructor: Margie Horton
Class Fee: $45
Time: 11 - 5
You can quilt it yourself! This class will take the mystery out of getting good results with your home sewing machine. Working with Maurene Noble's book, Machine Quilting Made Easy, you will learn the essential techniques for quilting with both a walking foot and a free motion foot on a sampler of different patterns.
Margie is a talented quilter and well respected instructor and we are fortunate to have her at Ruby Street Quiltworks. Bring your quilt top to class to get Margie's ideas for quilting.
To be successful in this class you need to be familiar with the operation of your sewing machine.
Supply List:
-Sewing machine in good working order. It is always a good idea to start with a new needle and bring your owners manual and a screwdriver. Attach the surround that goes around your machine's free arm and (if you have one) an acrylic table top that extends the machine's sewing area
-A surge protector specifically recommended by your sewing machine manufacturer to protect your machine from unexpected power fluctuations
-A spool of AURIFIL thread slightly darker than the fabric to be quilted
-2 bobbins filled with the AURIFIL thread
-A walking foot and free motion quilting foot. These are required for this class. Please be sure you know how to attach these feet to your machine.
-A package of universal, size 12 sewing machine needles
Please come prepared for class. Problems with your machine can be really frustrating. If you have questions about your machine's operation or attachments, please get help from your dealer before class.
Fabric and Batting (please cut before coming to class):
-2 pieces of muslin or solid colored cotton fabric cut into 28 x 34 inch pieces
-4 squares each 12 inches of the same cotton fabric
-A piece of cotton batting cut 28 x 34 inches (Warm and Natural is available at Ruby Street Quiltworks)
-2 squares each 12 inches of the same cotton batting
Before coming to class, mark a 22 x 28 inch rectangle in the center of one of the 28 x 34 inch fabric pieces using a blue wash-out marker. There should be about 3 inches of extra fabric on all 4 sides of your fabric. Mark a 2 inch border all the way around the inside of the 22 x 28 inch rectangle. Divide and mark the rectangle (inside the 2 inch border) into 6 inch squares. The result will be a grid 3 squares by 4 squares for a total of twelve squares. Don't worry about marking the top perfectly as it will be used only for practice. Having this done prior to class will allow you to maximize your practice time.
Other supplies:
-6 inch ruler
-24 inch ruler to mark the top before class (this will not be needed in class)
-A pencil or blue wash-out marker
-A fine line, black Pigma pen
-A notebook if you wish to take notes
-Small sharp scissors
-Safety pins for basting (Margie likes the Basting Brights we have at Ruby Street Quiltworks)
-Quilting gloves (Margie recommends Machingers which are available at the shop. Purchase a pair to fit snugly)
-A copy of Machine Quilting Made Easy by Maurene Noble
