Note: This class meets monthly on the second Sunday of each month. New members are always welcome.

Learn to Embroider. Get help on your current project. Learn new stitches. Join in with others working on the same project or choose your own. The Embroidery class is part class and part support group. What you'll find when you join in is a skilled and supportive instructor and a fun and helpful group of stitchers. 

Pat will be starting off with Crabapple Hill's Gardner's Alphabet pattern. This sampler quilt is an ambitious project. Choose to make just one of the blocks or the whole quilt. If you're still working on your Calendula Patterdrip quilt from last year you'll find lots of support (and see finished quilts) in class. Or bring your current project. You are welcome to work on any project you desire. If you are stuck, Pat will help unstick you. Having trouble with a stitch? Let Pat help you untangle it. Pick up lots of tips from Pat and other members of the group. Part of the fun of the class is to see what other stitchers are working on, learn from their adventures and be inspired.

If you are new to embroidery gather the supplies listed below and Pat will help you get started. If you want to start the Gardner's Alphabet quilt, patterns and thread are available at the shop. Pat can help you get organized and teach you what you need to know to complete this fantastic quilt. Otherwise, bring along your current project and join in the fun.

Ruby Red Mystery Club - Next Meeting, Thursday, May 16, 2013

Join the Ruby Red Mystery Club

Instructor:  Ruby Street Staff

Membership Fee:  $25 per month (Class fee includes 2 ½ yards of fabric.) 

Date and Time:  Third Thursday of each month. Two Sessions Available: Morning Session 10:30 - 12, Evening Session 5:30 - 7

Note:  The club will meet on the third Thursday of each month, with the exceptions of June (which will find Ruby Street Quiltworks in the direct path of Hurricane Shop Hop) and December. 

At each meeting of our Ruby Red Mystery Club you will receive a Ruby Red Bag stuffed with 2½ yards of fabric. What fabric? Well, there's the mystery! Each month you will receive a different selection of fabric. It may be traditional or modern. It may be neutral or bright. It may be American retro or ethnic. It may be for kids or for the haute artiste. It may fall within your comfort level or way, way, way far outside your box. You may receive lots of little pieces of fabric or just a few larger pieces. But it will always total 2½ yards.

 

You will have a month (until the next meeting) to create something with the contents of your bag. There is only one rule: you must use at least some of each fabric in your bag. What can I make? Anything. What can I add? Anything. May I ask for help? Yes. May I use a pattern? Yes. Do I have to use a pattern? No. What are the size paramaters? No larger than gigantic or smaller than miniscule. May I use fabric from my stash? Of course. May I purchase fabric somewhere else? Yes, but why would you?

 

When you come to the next meeting with your completed project (or an entertaining excuse) the first order of business will be snacks. (Bring a snack to share.) Then, "drum roll please," everyone's favorite ... "Show and Tell." Woohoo! You'll have the opportunity to show off your creation and ... the most fun of all ... see what other club members have created with the exact same bag full of fabric.

 

There will be awards and prizes to encourage your creativity, inspire your best craftsmanship and motivate you to finish your project. There will be the admiration and support of your fellow quilters. There will be ideas and suggestions and demos. There will be the excitement of receiving your next Ruby Red Mystery Bag! Star Shadows - Saturday, May 25, 2013

Quilt Size:  38" x 40"

Skill Level:  Accessible for beginners with some experience or lots of confidence. Fun for all levels.

These stars look like they are soaring across the sky. The star shadows create movement and dimension which is enhanced by the "Flying Geese" in the border.

Loris has done this lovely sample in unusual salmon reds and pinks but you might choose to use blue and silver for a shimmering night sky or borrow yellow and blue from Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night." The pattern shows dramatic midnight purples. The design is extremely versatile. Your favorite fabrics will make it your favorite quilt.

In this class you will piece the "Flying Geese" units (in the stars and border) quickly and accurately using the fantastic Wing Clipper I Ruler from Studio 180 Designs. This ruler has quickly become one of our favorites. If you haven't tried it, this is the perfect class for you!

Strips 'n Curves - Friday, May 31 and Saturday June 15, 2013

            Saturday, June 15 (10:30 - 5:30)

Wonderful studies in color, quilts made from the technique intoduced in the book Strips'n Curves by Louisa L Smith, are diverse and dazzling. Your own, unique quilt will emerge at the design wall, in class.

We are delighted to have Rose Flannigan teach this exciting class. She is an outstanding long arm quilter and an extraordinary teacher. I took Rose's Strips 'n Curves class a few years ago and fell in love with the color play and endless design possibilities from a simple pieced block. The quilt shown is the one I made in Rose's class. Check out her website for inspiring examples of her work including several Strips 'n Curves quilts.

In the first class session you will play with fabric and color. You will learn how to select a good focus fabric, read the colors in it and build a strata (a new fabric composed of color gradated strips) to complement the focus.

Before the next session you will do the work of preparing your strata.

The next session will be devoted to the construction and design of the quilt. Though "Strips 'n Curves" quilts appear complex, they are made of simple, straight strip sets sewn into a simple "Drunkards Path" block. This block has a nice gentle curve, perfect if this is your first experience with curves.

This is a class for intermediate quilters or confident beginners. You should be familiar with the operation of your sewing machine and basic rotary cutting and piecing techniques.
